Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect hundreds of millions of people each year, and many patients suffer from recurrent infections. In this study, researchers built a bioengineered ‘mini-bladder’ that reproduces key features of the human bladder, including its layered tissue structure and filling-and-emptying cycles. Using this model, they discovered that highly concentrated urine can weaken the bladder’s protective lining, allowing uropathogenic E. coli to persist within the tissue and making infections harder to eliminate. The work reveals a link between urine composition and infection persistence and provides a powerful new platform to study UTIs and test potential therapies under patient-mimicking conditions.
